Bench Top Fume Hood


A Bench Top Fume Hood or fume cupboard is a type of local ventilation device that is designed to limit exposure to hazardous or toxic fumes, vapors or dusts. A Bench Top Fume Hood is typically a large piece of equipment enclosing five sides of a work area, the bottom of which is most commonly located at a standing work height.

Three primary goals:

  • Protect the user from inhaling toxic gases
  • Protect the product or experiment
  • Protect the environment

Secondary functions of these devices may include explosion protection, spill containment, and other functions necessary to the work being done within the device.

Bench Top Fume Hood typically protect only the user, and are most commonly used in laboratories where hazardous or noxious chemicals are released during testing, research, development or teaching. They are also used in industrial applications or other activities where hazardous or noxious vapors, gases or dusts are generated or released.

Because one side (the front) of a Bench Top Fume Hood is open to the room occupied by the user, and the air within the Bench Top Fume Hood is potentially contaminated, the proper flow of air from the room into the hood is critical to its function. Much of fume hood design and operation is focused on maximizing the proper containment of the air and fumes within the Bench Top Fume Hood.

As most Bench Top Fume Hood are designed to connect to exhaust systems that expel the air directly to the exterior of a building, large quantities of energy are required to run fans that exhaust the air, and to heat, cool, filter, control and move the air that will replace the air exhausted.

Bench Top Fume Hood Construction:


In general, the Bench Top Fume Hood superstructure consist of worktop, sash - front glass frame, storage base cabinets, control and display panel, electrical distribution board, baffles, lighting encased with a vapor proof casing and utility facilities.

The superstructure is a dual wall construction with the air gap within for safety. The external wall of powder coated epoxy steel materials. Inner liners are of FRP fire retardant sheets/ PP which are resistant to heat and chemicals. It is furnished with clear lamination of 5mm thickness toughen glass, tampered proof sash assembly with counter balanced weight. All electrical fittings are of properly insulated & earthed.

The Bench Top Fume Hood is aerodynamically designed to have access for easy decontamination, cleaning and maintenance. Materials used in the construction of the Bench Top Fume Hood working space is able to minimize resistant to air flow and to avoid turbulence, backflow and air eddied. Fluctuation in the sash velocity as the sash is raised or lowered should be minimal.

Bench Top Fume Hood Performance:

The Bench Top Fume Hood is of an aerodynamic design capable of containing effluent generated within the hood at the face velocity of at least 0.5 m/sec or 80-100 FPM. The interior lighting shall be a minimum of 300-500 lux at worktop level.
